L. M. Birkhead director of the Friends had wired Coughlin following the priest’s repudiation of the proposed parade asking him also to repudiate the violent remarks of his followers and their distribution of “vicious and obscene anti Semitic pamphlets.”

Today Bernard D’Arcy Coughlin’s attorney and representative in New York advised Mr. Birkhead that he had received a telephone call from the Detroit priest telling him that he had ordered Social Justice distributors to stop using violent tactics but refusing to repudiate or disavow those things asked in the telegram.

Withdrawal of the application for a parade permit was announced late yesterday by Lawrence J. Gilpatrick 19 organizer of the demonstration on behalf of the “Social Distributors Club” after talking with Father Coughlin on the telephone and after conferring with police officials.
