Premier G. N. Huggins of Southern Rhodesia, who is now visiting in England intends to seek convocation of an “African Evian conference” of the powers to discuss possibilities of refugee settlement in Africa it was learned today.
There is a strong move in political circles to support such a conference and great efforts will be made to persuade the British Government to take the initiative in calling representatives of Southern and Northern Rhodesia, the Union of South Africa, Portuguese East Africa, Nyasaland Kenya and Belgian Congo to such a conference.
The view is held by these circles that the British Government’s offer in 1903 to settle Jews in Uganda should be repeated. It is pointed out that Uganda with an area of 100 000 square miles has a European population of 2.100 and it is suggested that if the plan is acceptable the Jews could be granted a restricted government. An alternative scheme is that certain portions of North and Southwest Kenya can be allocated for refugee settlement.
