George E. Deatherage, of St. Albans, W.Va., head of the fascist Knights of the White Camelia, addressing several thousand persons last night at the Innisfail Stadium here, attributed the Russo-German non-aggression pact to “a great rebuilding of the Christian faith inside Russia,” as well as pressure from outside, and warned his listeners of a “Jewish plan” to confuse Americans on the issue.
“I know what has been happening behind the scenes,” he said. “It will surprise you to know there has been a great rebuilding of the Christian faith in Russia…Stalin didn’t dare to do anything else (than agree to the pact). If he had mobilized, he would have been wiped out in 24 hours..You are going to be confused. That is part of the Jewish plan. But keep your faith and you will be all right.”
Deatherage joined Fritz Kuhn, head of the German-American Bund, in urging action against the “control of Jewish Communism” and “international Jewish bankers.” Another speaker was Joseph McWilliams, leader of the Christian Mobilizers. It was announced that Major-General George Van Horn Moseley, retired, whom Deatherage is urging for national coordinator of Fascist groups would address the second such rally in the same stadium on Sept. 2.
