The Government announced today in the official Palestine Gazette a measure increasing the term of imprisonment from two to eight years for aiding, abetting or harboring illegal immigrants–the third such increase in the past two years.
The measure also prohibits tourists from obtaining permanent visas while in Palestine. They are required to leave for abroad to obtain permanent immigration certificates. Jewish circles declared the order would cause extreme hardship to thousands now temporarily resident in Palestine who are awaiting entry certificates.
Reports from Beirut said the Syrian Coast Guard captured a steamship carrying 800 Jewish refugees. The ship was subsequently released and sailed in the direction of Cyprus. Lebanese police arrested 27 Jewish illegal immigrants attempting to enter Palestine after disembarking from a Lebanese sailboat.
