The Italian Consul has intervened with his German colleagues to secure transit visas for emigrants to Palestine, it was reported here today.
The Latvian Palestine Committee had appealed unsuccessfully to the German Consulate for transit visas enabling 20 Jews to cross Europe en route to Palestine. The committee then approached the Italian Consul who agreed to intervene on condition that the emigrants proceed via Italy and use Italian ships to Palestine.
The Nazi authorities here accepted the Italian request “in principle” on condition that it apply only to Latvian nationals. Actual issuance of the visas, however, is dependent on approval from Berlin.
