Commenting on the British White Paper on sadistic practices in Nazi concentration camps, the New York Times today termed them “crimes which will forever darken the pages of German history.” In an editorial captioned “The German Terror,” the Times pointed out that this Government had voiced “unsparing criticism of the terror which culminated in the savagery of last November” and cited President Roosevelt’s strong statement at the time of the pogroms.
The editorial concluded: “One would like to believe with the British Consul General at Frankfort on the Main, whose opinion is quoted in this White Paper, that ‘if the Government of Germany depended on the suffrage of the people, those in power and responsible for these outrages would be swept away by a storm of indignation.’ If that is not true, the German people share with their Government guilt for crimes which will forever darken the pages of German history.”
