Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the World Jewish Congress Administrative Committee, and the Rev. Maurice L. Perlzweig, head of the congress’s British section, arrived here on the Italian liner Vulcania today “to forward the cause of a united approach to the Jewish problems which must now inevitably come before the peace conference.”
In a joint statement, the congress leaders said that “American Jewry will undoubtedly play a role of the first importance in formulating a program for the establishment of Jewish rights, and we hope to secure the cooperative support of the leaders in this task.”
A large measure of unity has already been achieved in European Jewish communities, the statement said, particularly in England, “where different groups have been in constant and friendly consultation.” In an interview, Mr. Perlzweig outlined the following three general desiderata of the Jews at any future peace conference:
(1) Reestablishment of the Jews’ citizenship rights where they are abolished or menaced; (2) safeguarding of the Jews’ minority status, especially in the countries where they live in large masses and have distinctive languages and cultures; (3) large-scale immigration into Palestine, since the population movements resulting from Nazi aggression will necessitate reestablishment of many European Jews.
Dr. Goldmann intends to remain here about three weeks before returning to Europe. Mr. Perlzweig will tour the United States for about five weeks before proceeding on a world tour. Both will confer with leaders of the American Jewish Congress, whose annual convention in Washington they will address between Jan. 27 and 29. They will also consult with non-Jewish groups, including the American Red Cross, which, they said, must play “a part of decisive importance in the work” of relief in Europe.
