President Roosevelt called Admiral Stark and General Marshall into conference this morning to discuss Europe’s mounting refugee problems.
Under immediate consideration is a plan to send American ships to Bordeaux and Portuguese and Spanish ports to evacuate Americans stranded in Europe. Also being considered is the pressing problem of evacuating British and French children to Canada and the United States, it was learned.
An official British source told the J.T.A. that plans to save these children are proceeding rapidly in New York and Washington. He said thousands of families in the United States have already offered to take one or more Allied children into their homes. Under the quota, 6,500 children could be brought to this country each month, he said. Canada, besides opening private homes for refugee children, plans to establish Summer camps for their temporary care.
One factor in considering homes for evacuated children will be the matter of religion, the British source said. “We wish to place Protestant children in Protestant homes, Catholic children in Catholic homes, Jewish children in Jewish homes.”
