It is high time that the United States Government find out what Nazi diplomatic agents are up to in this country, the Herald Tribune asserted today in an editorial on the activities of Dr. George Alois Westrick, Commercial Counselor to the German Embassy at Washington, who is reputedly seeking to spur American-German trade.
Stressing the secrecy which has surrounded many of Westrick’s movements in New York, the editorial says that Washington, while greatly agitated over the activities of Nazi diplomatic agents elsewhere on the continent, has shown an “extraordinary calm in regard to their colleagues here.”
Dr. Westrick appeared today at the office of Motor Vehicle Commissioner Carroll Mealey after he had been notified by the office that his driver’s license had been temporarily suspended. The action was taken on the ground that Westrick had failed to notify the authorities of a change of address and had given false information in applying for the license.
