The United States should take action so that American ships can rescue not only British but Norwegian, Belgian, Danish Dutch, French, German and Jewish children as well, the Daily News declares editorially today.
The newspaper points out that while the amendment to the Neutrality Act which permits American ships to enter combat zones applies to children “of all nations,” comment at Washington is that in practice this will mean British children only since ships for the rescue of other children will not be allowed to pass the British blockade.
The newspaper expresses disbelief that the British Government, if “properly approached,” would refuse to grant safe conduct through its blockade for such ships bound for any port in German-occupied territory. If Britain should balk, the newspaper urges the United States to refuse to send ships for British children.
