A probe of Bundists and Klansmen in New Jersey by the House Committee Investigating Un-American activities was urged today by Rep. J. Parnell Thomas (Rep. N. J.) member of the committee, in a wire to Martin Dies. The telegram came in the wake of the Bund-Klan rally at Camp Nordland, N.J., yesterday. The message read as follows:
“German-American Bund Ku-Klux Klan and Edgar Smyth’s organization (Protestant War Veterans of America) held meeting at Camp Nordland, N.J. yesterday. About 1,000 present. Our investigator (Robert) Barker was on hand. Barker and investigators known to us have made thorough study of Bund situation in N.J. and now working on report. I have contacted Barker today and both he and I are in favor of holding public hearings in Newark. Please see that this is arranged during your visit to New York City. This is very important. Also important that our committee ask for additional appropriations in order to keep up certain work now pending.”
Dies replied by telegram from the west coast that he would be “glad to comply with your excellent suggestion.” It was learned that the FBI as well as the Dies Committee had agents at the rally.
