More than 25,000 Jewish refugees from various countries have gone without food for the past several days because of a complete breakdown of 29 local relief organizations in the Toulouse district, it was learned here today. They include several thousand who were recently demobilized from the French Army.
The relief agencies have been forced to discontinue assistance to the refugees because of lack of funds.
Collapse of these groups leaves only three Jewish relief committees still operating in the entire unoccupied area of France. These are functioning in Nice, Marseille and among them serve only several thousand refugees, or only a small proportion of those in need. Even these groups may be forced to suspend shortly because of lack of funds.
As foreigners thrown on the public funds, the refugees face internment in special camps. While solving the problem of food and shelter for the refugees, such a measure will mean loss of freedom and a serious setback to whatever prospects they may have had of recovering their economic independence.
