High Commissioner Sir Harold MacMichael is negotiating with the British Colonial office regarding possible compensation of civilian war victims from public funds, it was learned today.
Meanwhile, squads of workmen under the direction of civil officials in Tel Aviv pressed the task of clearing away debris and repairing dwellings damaged in Monday’s Italian air raid.
Messages of condolences to the municipality poured in from all parts of the country, including the Jerusalem municipality, foreign consuls and military authorities. A total of 113 persons who lost their lives in the bombing have been buried.
The press speculates on whether the present situation justifies the opening of schools and suggests that schoolchildren be evacuated to less dangerous places. The Jewish National Council (Vaad Leumi), however, opposes such action for political and financial reasons. The Council members are doing their utmost to ensure adequate medical facilities in Tel Aviv and elsewhere in Palestine. Fifteen hundred beds have been prepared in various parts of the country, 700 of which have been paid for by the Palestine Government.
