Declaring that “typhus already rages in Warsaw” as result of starvation and that the people of Belgium are already on a ration of seven ounces of bread a day, Herbert Hoover, in an address at Vassar college, broadcast by CBS, urged that American opinion not remain indifferent to the sufferings of the population in Nazi-occupied territories.
Hoover estimated there were three million Jews among the 37 million persons in Europe in need of American food relief. He addressed himself to educational and religious leaders of the United States, asking support of his campaign for shipment of food from America for feeding of the starving populations in the occupied territories of Central Poland, Norway, Holland, Belgium and Finland.
