2 Jewish Leaders Hit Dissolution of United Jewis Appeal; Ask New Unity Effort

Rabbi Emil W. Leiqziger, president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, has issued a statement criticizing the dissolution of the United Jewish Appeal and calling for “such pressure as may retrieve the error.” His statement follows:

“I consider the dissolution of the United Jewis Appeal a major defeat of the basis hope for unity in the heart of the American Jew. The Central Conference of American Rabbis and other agencies centered in the synagogue have been striving, so far without result, but are still striviing toward unity for American Israel in the field of public relations.

“In the midst of this difficult struggle, the announced failure of the UPA and the JDC to come together in the field of relief and reconstruction for millions of our suffering brethren the world over is doubly tragic and calls for such pressure as may retrieve the error. The JDC and the UPA owe to the Jewish community in America a complete statement of the causes of a dissolution which will have unfortunate repercussions in all Jewish communities.”
