The George Cross has been awarded to Temporary Lieutenant Harold Reginald Newgass, former manager of the Bernhard Baron Settlement, for “great gallantry and undaunted devotion to duty,” it was announced today. The Distinguished Service Cross was awarded to Lieutenant Martin, a Jewish National Fund worker, and to Major Robert B. Solomon for “good services during the withdrawal from Dunkirk.”
The number of Jews now serving in the British army runs to tens of thousands, but the actual number cannot be revealed, Dayan Gollop, senior Jewish chaplain for the British forces, declared today in an address before the Rabbis’ Emergency Committee. The committee decided unanimously to send parcels of kosher food to needy members of the forces during the whole year, beginning with Passover.
