The United States Lines will soon send two of its steamers to Lisbon to transport to the United States many of the American citizens and holders of U. S. immigration visas who are now stranded in Portugal, it was reported here today.
The report has provoked great interest among the various relief organizations here interested in refugee relief work since thousands of refugees who are holders of American visas have no hope of booking passage in the next six months on American Export Line steamers or on any of the small Portuguese and Spanish ships which sail weekly from here to New York.
A sealed train with Jewish refugees from Germany arrived in Lisbon today, directly from Berlin. Another train is expected within a few days.
(The New York office of the United States Line confirmed to the J.T.A. that negotiations are in progress with the Maritime Commission in Washington for permission to send two ships to Lisbon. The permission of the Maritime Commission is necessary because the United States Line is subsidized by the Government.)
