A special service at Temple Beth El tonight opened the 37th biennial council of the Union of Hebrew Congregations, for which 2,000 delegates from all over the United States have arrived. The convention will continue through April 30.
Tonight’s services were marked by an address by Robert P. Goldman, president of the Union, and a performance of Julius Chajes’ Cantata on Psalm 142, given here for the first time by the composer, a young Viennese refugee pianist who is musical director at the Detroit Jewish Community Center.
Union affiliates are meeting in Detroit concurrently, the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods holding its 14th biennial assembly, the National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods its ninth biennial convention and the National Federation of Temple Youth its second biennial convention.
A featured session of the Union’s council will be a symposium on “How Can Judaism Help Us in Our Work,” at which Mr. Goldman will preside and scheduled speakers are Morris Waldman, secretary of the American Jewish Committee; Sigmund Livingston, chairman of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith; Rabbi Morton M. Berman of the American Jewish Congress; Fred Butzel, of the National Council of Federations and Welfare Funds, and B. C. Sherman of the Jewish Labor Committee.
