Palestine Jews who were evacuated from settlements on the Syrian frontier began to return to their homes today following the conclusion of the armistice in Syria between the British and French, it was reported here.
Jewish circles in London welcomed the news of the end of the war and urged Jewish-Arab cooperation for the speedy rehabilitation of the economic structure of Syria. The hostilities there, they said, were only one episode in a wider frame that deeply affected the entire Near East, of which Palestine has become the “heart of a solid Allied block facing the Axis in the Mediterranean. While Palestine now is not immediately threatened, they pointed out, the respite must be used for intense preparations for eventual developments.
Prior to the collapse of France, Syria was considered the chief hinterland of Palestine for industrial commodities as well as for some agricultural products. Palestine’s economy, which has been kept intact, is in position now to bring conditions in Syria back to normal, the Jewish leaders here pointed out.
