Hungary Threatens to Close Down Synagogues when “v” Appears on Their Walls

Download PDF for this date

The Hungarian authorities have threatened to close down a number of synagogues throughout the country following the appearance of the letter “V” on their walls, it was reported here today.

The threat follows an order issued this week by the Hungarian authorities in the provinces of Transylvania and Carpatho-Russia providing for the immediate closing down there of a number of Jewish schools in reprisal for the appearance of the letter “V” on the walls of the schools. Hungarian Nazi newspapers reporting the liquidation of the schools stated that “the synagogues and the Jewish schools are nests of anti-Hungarian activities, and their existence can no longer be tolerated.”
