The capture of Tobruk by the British would have been impossible without the help of Palestine Jewish volunteers serving in the British army, the Ministry of Information revealed here today in a statement on “Jewish Soldiers in the Near East.”
Reviewing the role which Jewish volunteers are playing in the British military forces in the Near East, the statement says:
“There are now ten thousand warriors of Judah in the Jewish military effort in Palestine. The same number were embodied in the Jewish Legion in 1918 but these were then recruited from the whole world. The pioneers in Cyrenaica have been highly praised by British officers. The first Palestine Company of the Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps accompanied forward troops from Sidi Barrani to Benghazi. Lieut. General Sir Richard O’Connor stated in despatches that the capture of Tobruk would have been impossible without the help of the Pioneers at Sollum.”
