Moses W. Beckelman, a member of the J.D.C.’s overseas staff, will fly to Colombia from Miami next Wednesday on the first lap of a tour which will cover all of the 20 Central and South American republics, it was announced at a press conference today addressed by Alexander Kahn, vice-chairman of the J.D.C., Moses A. Leavitt, secretary, and Morris C. Troper, chairman of the European Council. Mr. Beckelmen will meet with leaders of Latin American Jewish communities and with the refugee aid committee charged with assisting the needy among the newly arrived immigrants.
In the course of Mr. Beckelman’s trip he will examine the programs of refugee aid, conducted in large part with J.D.C. funds, which include relief, rehabilitation, child care, medical aid and other forms of help. He will investigate the possibilities of vocational retraining and economic assistance programs to make as many refugees as possible permanently self-supporting. Stimulation and coordination of Jewish community organization and social welfare programs to increase the capacity of resident Jewish populations for dealing with continuing refugee problems, will be among his major tasks.
