The Nazi authorities in Salonika, Greece, have threatened to hold 500 Jews as hostages unless the Jewish Communal Council furnishes them with hundreds of Jewish longshoremen to be sent to work in Rumanian ports, according to reliable information reaching here today.
There is a severe shortage of dock workers in Rumania as a result of the flight of Rumanian longshoremen who refuse to work under Nazi taskmasters and the constant bombing by Soviet planes. In an attempt to alleviate this condition, the German officials in Greece ordered the Jewish Communal Board in Salonika to mobilize all Jewish longshoremen for transportation to Rumania.
