Authorized sources today disclosed that Leon Blum, former French Premier, has been sentenced by Marshal Petain to confinement for life in the fortress of Col Protalet which is 10,800 meters high in the mountains near the Franco-Spanish frontier.
Speaking over the radio, Petain today stated that Blum, Georges Mandel and others of the arrested ex-members of French cabinets, are at present being detained at an unnamed fortress, but that the tribunal in Riem is still empowered to try them and issue different sentences. Blum is officially charged with “neglecting to give the armament industry the proper stimulation, but on the contrary, disorganizing it through nationalization.” Another charge against Blum is that while Premier he introduced social reforms which led to social warfare thus putting France in danger.
