The eighty-six refugees who have been wandering for ten months vainly seeking haven in South America were today granted permission to temporarily stay in the Dutch colony of Curacao, it was reported today by the Netherlands East Indies News Agency. The announcement came as the refugees were on the high seas back to Spain.
According to an agreement reached between the Joint Distribution Committee and the Netherlands government in London, the refugees will be permitted to stay in Curacao for three months thus giving the JDC time to secure permanent residence for them somewhere in the Western Hemisphere. The JDC has guaranteed funds for their maintenance until that time. Permission for the refugees to land was obtained through the efforts of Sir Herbert Emerson, League of Nation’s High Commissioner for Refugees.
