The drive to support the Zionist demand for a Jewish Army in Palestine received new impetus today at a conference held here under the auspices of the Committee for a Jewish Army. A message from Sec. Stimpson was read.
Samuel Harden Church, President of the Carnegie Institute, who presided, declared the proposed Jewish Army would not only increase the strength of the anti-Axis forces in the Near East but would also be the foundation for the creation of a postwar democratic state there which would bring peace and security to that section of the world. Col. John Henry Patterson, Commander of the Jewish Legion in the first World War, declared that creation of the army would enable Britain to take advantage of great manpower resources now lying fallow because of administrative policies. Pierre Von Paassen predicted the issue of the war would be settled in the Near Eastern battle grounds and pointed out that this made the Jewish Army cause the concern of every democracy. Canadian support of the drive was predicted by Louis K. Fitch, Canadian Conservative Party leader.
