Both American and Portuguese ships will continue to sail from this port to the United States, despite the outbreak of the war with Japan, it was announced here today.
The office of the American Export Lines reported that the company had made no change in sailing schedules. A similar announcement was issued by the operators of the Portuguese ships.
(The American Export Lines office in New York, however, has announced that the Exeter, which was to have sailed for Lisbon on Friday, has been ordered held in port. The Excambion, which is now in Lisbon, will return to America on her regular schedule. The line’s officials were unable to state whether the ban on sailings from New York to Lisbon was temporary or permanent. The Joint Distribution Committee in New York announced that for the present they were still booking passengers as usual.)
If the war should result in the cessation of sailings from Lisbon it will mean that the last major port of debarkation for European refugees has been closed.
