Virtually all the 25,000 Jews in the former Yugoslav territory now comprising the Kingdom of Croatia have been rendered destitute by the anti-Semitic policy of the regime which bars them from all productive labor and professional activity, it was learned here today. Except for a few hundred technicians and experts in certain industries who could not be replaced, the Jews of the puppet state have been left without any occupation and are dependent on their relief organizations for sustenance, reports received here disclose.
Thousands of Jews in Croatia are already in concentration camps. About 1,400 women and children are interned in a camp at Labor-Grad, near Zlater, about 50 kilometers north of Zagreb. The camp is maintained entirely by the Jewish community which had to renovate the buildings to make them habitable.
About 3,000 men are interned at Jasnovac, about a hundred kilometers south of Zagreb. In most provincial towns the Jews have been turned out of their homes and either locked up or forced into common quarters.
Urgent appeals for aid for the Jews of Croatia were received here today by Jewish relief agencies. They pointed out that owing to the impoverishment of the Jewish community, communal taxes and relief funds could not be collected and that the local Jewish relief groups are not able to act to relieve distress. The communities have to send food, clothing, medicaments, blankets, etc., to the interned men, women and children and furnish relief to thousands of Jews who are still at liberty.
