American Jews expecting the arrival of their relatives from Europe were today Informed by the Hebrew Immigration Aid Society that while the U.S. custom authorities have ceased issuing individual passes to meet passengers at incoming steamers, representatives of the HIAS are still permitted to meet incoming steamers and render aid to immigrant refugees.
“Since the entry of the United States into the war,” the HIAS statement says, “information may not be given as to the date of arrival of a ship. The Port Authorities have ceased issuing U.S. custom passes. Relatives have, therefore, no way of knowing when ships come in and practically no possibility of waiting for the arrival of those for whose rescue they have made many arduous and costly efforts. This task is now being performed in their behalf almost exclusively by HIAS which has served American Jewry in this field for more than a half century.”
