The 20th anniversary of the adoption by both Houses of Congress of the joint resolution favoring the establishment of a Jewish National Home in Palestine will be celebrated by 1,200 delegates from all parts of the nation at the National Conference for Palestine in Cleveland on January 17 and 18, it was announced today by Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, National Chairman of the United Palestine Appeal which is sponsoring the conference.
“The moral support extended to the reconstruction of Palestine by the American people through Congress, and the financial support extended by American Jewry through the United Palestine Appeal are now paying dividends to America at war,” Dr. Silver said. “The 550,000 Jews in Palestine are maintaining a bastion of the anti-Axis forces in the Near East. Their young men are in the forefront of the Battle of Libya, their factories are turning out ever-increasing amounts of war material, and their modern farms are feeding the garrisons of the Near East. It is to mobilize the support of American Jewry for our allies in the Near East that this national conference has been called.”
The Resolution on Palestine adopted twenty years ago by the 67th Congress stated: “Resolved by the Senate and the House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled that the United States of America favors the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of Christian and all other non-Jewish communities in Palestine, and that the holy places and religious buildings and sites in Palestine shall be adequately protected.”
