Jews in Poland will henceforth have to pay four dollars for a kilo of rationed bread under a new order issued by the Nazi authorities, it was reported here today by the Polish Telegraphic Agency.
The order setting the price of rationed bread for Poles and Jews at twenty zlotys – nominally four dollars – per kilo, will automatically increase the ever-growing starvation of the Jews in Poland, since the impoverished Jewish population is in no position to pay such a high price for the fifty grams of bread daily to which a Jew in Poland is entitled. Prices on other rationed foodstuff have similarly been raised by the Nazi authorities in Poland.
The step, it is believed here, is due to the fact that the occupational administration, anxious over the growing scarcity of food, wishes to provide bread for the Germans first. It has thus deliberately raised the price for Poles and Jews to an extent which will make it impossible for the majority of them to acquire even the meager rations to which they are entitled.
