A more progressive immigration policy may be expected here as a result of the nomination of Dr. Alexandre Marcandes Filho, a Sao Paulo lawyer, as Minister of Labor, it was predicted today.
It was pointed out that the new Minister who, among other functions, will regulate immigration is known to support the theory that what Brazil needs is not only more capital but also a new influx of immigrants – not only agricultural laborers but all economically productive elements.
A sharp attack against any “racial discrimination” in the selection of prospective immigrants, published in a newspaper here close to the new Minister, supports the opinion that Brazil can be expected to adopt a more liberal immigration policy. The newspaper stressed the economic advantages which other countries had obtained as a result of giving haven to refugees persecuted on religious grounds.
