The United States Government was asked to pledge itself to support the establishment of a self-governing Jewish Commonwealth in Palestine after the war in a resolution adopted last night at the closing session of the National Conference for Palestine, held here under the auspices of the United Palestine Appeal.

The resolution urged the Federal government to incorporate “into its postwar program, as outlined in the Atlantic Charter and the Declaration of the United Nations, active support of the establishment of a self-governing Jewish Commonwealth of Palestine to which Jews who need or wish to live there may freely return.”

The conference also adopted a resolution asking the U. S. Government to aid in the formation of a Jewish army for the defense of Palestine and other parts of the Middle East. Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, national president of the United Palestine Appeal, was re-elected to that post for the fifth time at the conference. Tribute to Rabbi Silver for his work in behalf of Palestine was paid by Senator Alben Berkley, Henry Monsky, president of the B’nai B’rith; Mrs. Tamar De Sola Pool, Hadassah president; Leon Gellman, president of the Mizrachi and David Wertheim, secretary of the Poale Zion organization.
