Approximately 1,000 refugees will leave European shores bound for the Western Hemisphere during the month of March, it was revealed today by the Joint Distribution Committee. The departure of these emigrants will bring to approximately 3,200 the number of Jews evacuated from Europe by the J.D.C. since Pearl Harbor.

Although the names of the boats and the exact sailing dates cannot be revealed due to censorship regulations, Moses A. Leavitt, Secretary of the J.D.C., announced that, in the course of the month, two Portuguese steamers will leave from Lisbon with 560 and 400 passengers, respectively. Some 75 refugees who were stranded in Spain as a result of the cancellation of a scheduled sailing by a Spanish steamer, will be enabled by the J.D.C. to complete their voyage on one of the Portuguese vessels. Mr. Leavitt said once the March sailings have been completed, the J.D.C. will arrange for another boat to carry approximately 500 visa-holders in France to their destination.
