The execution of more “Jews and Communists” in France and the deportation to hard labor in Nazi camps in Eastern Europe of 500 more Jewish and other hostages, was officially announced today in Paris by the Nazi general, Ernst von Schaumburg, the German commander of the Paris area.
Declaring that the measures have been taken in reprisal for attacks on German soldiers in occupied France, the Nazi general made public the following decree, promulgated yesterday.
“A. Ten Communists, Jews and persons responsible through solidarity will be shot immediately B. If, a week after publication of the present notice, the attacker is not arrested, twenty Communists and Jews responsible through solidarity will be sent immediately before a firing squad. C. Five hundred Communists Jews or persons responsible through solidarity will be deported to the East to carry out forced labor in camps.”
After this decree was published, Gen. von Schaumburg announced that French civilians had surrendered to the police some of the persons allegedly responsible for the attacks. Consequently, he said, the 20 persons falling into category “B” of the order will be spared.
