An appeal “to the civilized world” to respond to the desperate call for food coming from the Jews in Nazi-held Poland was issued here today by a conference of representatives of Jewish organizations and religious groups called by the Council of Polish Jews in England.
A representative of the Polish Government-in-Exile who addressed the conference spoke of the famine prevailing in occupied Poland as a result of the Nazis shipping all foodstuffs to Germany. He, however, expressed doubt as to whether food sent to Nazi-held Poland will reach its destination.
The conference, after hearing a number of reports, adopted a resolution expressing firm belief in the restoration of a free, independent and democratic Poland. Another resolution stated that “deeply concerned with the super-human sufferings of the Jews in Poland, the conference appeals to the civilized world to respond to the cry for help coming from behind the walls of the ghettos.” It expressed the hope that “American Jews will generously assist in alleviating the sufferings of hundreds of thousands of their co-religionists.”
