Whatever the result of the battle in Egypt may be, the British armed forces will defend Palestine, Transjordan, Syria and Lebanon, high military authorities announced today in a statement published in the Haaretz, a leading Hebrew newspaper.
The British military authorities view with favor the enlistment of Jews in fighting units within the British Army, the Haaretz reported. They see in this enlistment an important contribution to the defense of Palestine, the paper quoted the military leaders as stating.
Praise for the extent of Jewish participation in the Palestine war effort was expressed today by the Palestine High Commissioner, Sir Harold Alfred MacMichael, in a message to the special War Effort edition of the Hazofeh, one of the daily newspapers here. The High Commissioner lauded the knowledge, skill, enthusiasm and determination which the Jews in Palestine are showing in all fields, including war production and civilian defense.
Official quarters today stated that only seven Palestinians were taken prisoners by the Nazis in the recent offensive in Libya. In addition, two were wounded in action. Egyptian newspapers report that many Jews who served in the Free French forces fell heroically at Bir Hakim.
