Thousands of American relatives and friends of refugees from Nazi-held countries have invoked the cooperation and the services of the HIAS in behalf of prospective immigrants to the United States and to other lands of refuge during the first six months of the current year, the Society stated today in a report of its activities covering the period between January 1 and June 30, 1942.
Isaac L. Asofsky, Executive Director, who released the report which deals with the home front services rendered by the Society since Pearl Harbor, stated that the HIAS Pier Service met and ministered to the needs of 3,600 Jewish refugee-immigrants who arrived in this country on 163 ships since January 1. 450 of the new arrivals were sheltered by the Society at its home, for varying periods, prior to their being released to their relatives or friends in points other than the ports at which their ships landed.
Mr. Asofsky added that a marked increase was noted in the activities of the naturalization department which helped 3,104 persons to apply for first and second citizenship papers.
