Harry Greenstein, executive director of the Jewish Welfare Fund of Baltimore, has been appointed Regional Evacuation Officer of the Third Army Corps Area, comprising the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the District of Columbia, it was announced by James M. Landis, national director of the Office of Civilian Defense. Mr. Greenstein will assume his new duties immediately.
Judge Rowland K. Adams, director of the Third Civilian Defense Region, in a letter to Mr. L. Edwin Goldman, president of the Associated Jewish Charities here, requested that Mr. Greenstein be granted a leave of absence so that he could undertake this highly important task. In describing the responsibilities of the office, Judge Adams stated: “The development of detailed plans as to evacuation and reception areas, the surveys in connection therewith, the arrangements for transportation, housing, health, and other welfare features, are but a few of the important matters to be dealt with. While we hope that it will not be necessary to evacuate any part of our civilian population, we must be prepared to do so if it becomes necessary, and the speed with which modern war moves leaves no time for planning after danger is imminent.”
Mr. Goldman presented the letter of Judge Adams to a special meeting of the Board of Directors of the Associated Jewish Charities and the Board unanimously granted to Mr. Greenstein the leave of absence requested.
