Information released here today by the headquarters of the Zionist Organization of America states that Mezuzas are very much in demand amongst British troops stationed in the Middle East. Australians in particular–Jews as well as non-Jews–regard the little scrolls as very lucky amulets. Many of the Australian soldiers have sent Mezuzas to their relatives at home urging that they should be put on the doorpost as a guard against air raids.
An “Institute for the Research of Palestine and the Near East” has been established in Palestine under the auspices of the Polish Government-in-Exile, the same report reveals. Its aim is to give Polish officers, officials, and intellectuals now in Palestine an opportunity to study at first hand, all the problems of the Near East. Special attention will be paid to the problems relating to the upbuilding of the Jewish National Homeland in Palestine. A lecture hall for the Institute has been placed at its disposal by the Hebrew University at Jerusalem. Most of the lectures will be delivered by Jewish specialists, including professors and lecturers from the University.
