The State Department is making special efforts in behalf of refugees in possession of documents which would permit their departure from unoccupied France, it was learned here today from a letter sent by the Department to Herman Hoffman, grand master of the Independent Order Brith Abraham, a Jewish fraternal organization.
“The Department and the American Embassy in Vichy will continue their active interest in this matter although, at this moment, little hope can be entertained for a satisfactory conclusion of the general deportation question,” the letter stated.
