Official announcement of the resignation of Dr. Maurice J. Karpf as executive secretary of the Los Angeles Jewish Community Council was made this week by Judge Harry A. Hollzer, president, following a meeting of the council’s board of directors, Dr. Karpf’s status as executive director of the Federation of Jewish Welfare Organizations is not affected, and he will continue to serve the community in that capacity.
Dr. Karpf’s letter of resignation was addressed to Judge Hollzer and read, in part, as follows; “As you know, I have been considering for same months resigning from the Council because the tasks and the problems involved in administering the three organizations (Welfare Fund, Council and Federation) under the conditions prevailing in this community seemed beyond human endurance, I refrained from doing so not only because you asked me not to, but also because I hoped that the conflicts would be resolved and I would be permitted to concentrate my attention and energies on the really important problems facing our people here and elsewhere. The review of last year’s work, incident to the preparation of the annual report to the Council, the events of the last two or three months, as well as information which reached me while in the East and since my return, convinced me that so much time and energy will be required in non-contructive effort that it does not seem worthwhile to continue in my present relationship. I beg leave, therefore, to tender herewith my resignation to take effect at the earliest possible date.”
