Chief Rabbi Joseph Herman Hertz was created a “Companion of Honor” today in the annual New Year’s Honors List issued by the King. There are only some forty-odd “Companions of Honor” in the entire British empire, including such notables as Prime Minister Churchill and Prime Minister Jan Smuts of South Africa.
Commenting on the award, the Manchester Guardian states that “it is not only a personal tribute to Rabbi Hertz but a timely expression of sympathy for the afflictions of the Jews.” The Board of Deputies of British Jews, in a message sent to the Chief Rabbi, congratulated him on the “honor which has been conferred upon the spiritual leadership of English Jewry.”
Another Jew mentioned in today’s Honors List is Major Jack Ben Brunel Cohen, secretary of the British Legion, who was knighted.
