The establishment of a Jewish Department by the Polish Government within the bureau which is preparing plans for the peace conference has been requested by Dr. Ignacy Schwarsbart, one of the two Jewish members of the Polish National Council, it was disclosed today with publication of the debate on the Polish budget which took place at a closed session of the Council last month.
At Dr. Schwarzbart’s demand, the Government, at that session, allocated $14,000 to Polish-Jewish organizations. He also requested that the Polish Government make provisions to care for the Polish-Jewish refugees abroad, pointing out that forty-two percent of the funds raised in America for Poles in Russia came from Jews. A government spokesman replied that the Polish authorities will continue to grant equal care to all Polish citizens abroad.
Discussing the section of the budget dealing with education, Schwarzbart stated that the Polish delegate to the recent International Council of Students was the only one to refrain from voting for a motion to condemn anti-Semitism. The government spokesmen agreed that the delegate’s conduct should be condemned.
