Dr. Steinberg Reports on His Negotiations in Australia for Jewish Mass-immigration

Details of his negotiations with the Australian Government with regard to the establishment of a Jewish settlement in the Kimberley district of Western Australia through Jewish mass-immigration from European countries were given here today at a press conference by Dr. I. Steinberg, president of the Jewish Freeland League, which is sponsoring the project.

Dr. Steinberg, who arrived here this week en route from Australia to London emphasized that the project has the support of all the church leaders in Australia as well as of the labor unions and the leaders of commerce and industry. The West Australian government has approved the plan, under which a territory as big as Belgium would be opened for Jewish colonization.

Emphasizing that neither the Jews nor the non-Jews in Australia who support the Kimberley project consider it to be competition to the Jewish development of Palestine, Dr. Steinberg reported that an investigation carried out in the Kimberly area by experts establish that it is suitable for the settling of European people At present this territory is populated only by forty white families and several hundred colored families.

Dr. Steinberg will remain in the United States for several months, during which time be will confer with American Jewish leaders on the project.
