The Sara Delano Roosevelt Memorial House was dedicated here today as an inter-faith center for students of Hunter College at ceremonies participated in by Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, Henry Monsky, president of B’nai B’rith, Dr. George N. Shuster, president of Hunter College, and other dignitaries. Mrs. Roosevelt brought a personal message from the President.
The center, which is composed of two adjoining houses formerly owned by the President’s mother, was donated to the college a year ago by a committee of laymen, headed by Joseph P. Day, chairman; Charles H. Tuttle, and John S. Burke, honorary chairmen, and A. C. Horn, treasurer, as a meeting place for religious groups, Protestant, Catholic and Jewish, which will have their clubs in the building. The center will also house special social and athletic clubs of the college. It will be the first center of unity of its kind in New York City to help promote fraternalism among the different religions.
The Student Christian Association, non-denominational, and other Protestant clubs will occupy the top floor; the Newman Club, serving the Catholic students, will be located on the fourth floor, and the Hillel Foundation, a branch of B’nai B’rith will have the third floor. There will be directors and advisors for each group.
