The land problem in Palestine has assumed the status of “a first rate political problem,” which can be solved only by wide-spread agrarian reform, Dr. Abraham Granovsky, a director of the Jewish National Fund, told a press conference here today.
Existing water resources, if exploited properly, Dr. Granovsky said, could arrogate 4,000,000 additional dunams of land on which thousands of new settlements could be established. He disclosed that a comprehensive scheme covering the post-war rendition period has been prepared, but did not disclose any details. The Jewish National Fund, Dr. Granovsky revealed, purchased 211,000 dunams in the first four months of this year, and is spending $800,000 monthly for new land.
The Palestine Government’s labor office today released figures showing that strikes and lockouts cost 111,134 working days during 1943. Some 131 firms and $5,220 workers were involved. These figures cover only Jewish enterprises.
