The Nazi-controlled Hungarian Government today issued decrees further restricting Jewish participation in the country’s economy. The new regulations bar Jews from certain types of enterprises which up until now had been exempt from the anti-Jewish regulations. They also specify which categories of business are to be shut down, and which are to have non-Jewish managers appointed to operate them.
All firms “whose activities are not in the public interest” are to be closed immediately. Those “which must be kept open in the public interest,” such as hotels, boarding-houses, and garages will not be shut down, but will be taken out of the hands of the Jewish owners. “Undertakings of local interest,” such as public baths and restaurants can either be closed, left under the control of the present owners or placed under the supervision of “Aryan” managers, depending on the decision of local authorities.
The German Transkontinent press reports today that slightly more than two square yards housing space have been allotted for each person transferred to the large ghetto which has been established in Ujpest, Budapest’s largest suburb. A few houses have been set aside for Jews in isolated districts outside the ghetto, but these must be marked with yellow stars, the Transkontinent dispatch says.
The Budapest radio announced today that as of this Thursday, May 25, Jews are barred from all theatres, cinema houses and concert halls. On occasion special “Jim Crow” performances may be scheduled, to which only Jews will be admitted, the broadcast said. It also reported that the mayors of all towns have been instructed to designate special restaurants for Jews.
