World Jewish Congress Representative Evokes Ire of Argentine Nationalist Press

An appeal for the rescue of Jews from Europe made here last night by Arich Tartakower, secretary of the World Jewish Congress. provoked severe anti-Jewish articles in the nationalist press which demands that Argentina remain closed to Jewish immigration even after the war.

The newspaper La Fonda, commenting on Mr. Tartakower’s appeal, writes. “Fortunately we are not represented on the Intergovernmental Committee for Refugees and are not obliged to accept its decisions. The committee’s aim is the placing of refugees in countries considered suitable for immigration. These refugees are nothing less than 1,000,000 Jews. There is an important and dangerous aspect to this problem. We need a population that likes to work, is efficient, creative and productive. Jewish immigrants do not possess these qualities.”
