WITH THE U.S. FIFTH ARMY IN ITALY (Sep. 28)
Jewish soldiers of Gen. Mark Clark’s Fifth Army observed Yom Kippur with the thunder of guns from a tremendous artillery duel acting as a background.
Services were held at Fifth Army headquarters, divisional headquarters and in small groups in the field. Wherever military operations permitted Gen. Clark gave permission to Jewish officers and men to attend services and arranged transportation for them.
Capt. Aron Paperman of Plainfield, N. J., conducted services at Fifth Army head quarters with Capt. Isaac Hickman of Capetown, a Jewish chaplain with the South African elements of the Fifth Army, assisting. Pfe Ralph Sternberz of New York City acted as cantor.
